Endowment Funds for the
Deacon Community
The
Deacon Council, at its April 2006, approved the establishment of three endowment
funds for the Deacon Community. These funds will provide a permanent funding
source for the formation of deacons and the on-going ministry and life of the
deacon community and provide assistance for those in need.
The
Funds
-
The Deacon Leo Smith Fund for the Ministry and Life of the Deacon Community
This fund will be used for
promoting various aspects of the ministry and life of the deacon community.
This fund is named after Deacon Leo Smith. He was in the first ordination
class and served as the first Bishop’s Representative to the Community. As
a true pioneer in the community he set an admirable example of diaconal
ministry and encouraged the community to live up to its true potential of
faithful, competent and effective service. Before he died last year, Leo
gave the community a sizeable gift to promote the ministry and life of the
community, part of which provides the seed money for this fund.
-
The Bishop Floyd Begin Fund for the Formation of Deacons
This fund will provide
assistance for the formation of deacon aspirants and candidates,
particularly those who face financial difficulty in formation. This fund is
named after Bishop Begin. As the first bishop of the diocese, he saw the
need for diaconal ministry and began the deacon formation in the diocese.
-
The St. Stephen Deacon Help Fund
There is a long tradition
in our diocese of providing assistance to our deacons, the wives of deacons
and the widows of deacons who are in financial need, whether on an ongoing
basis or to help them through an emergency. This fund will expand our
annual appeal into a permanent fund to ensure that within our community the
“Greek widows” of our day will receive the help that they need. This fund is
named after St. Stephen, whom our tradition holds to be one of the first
deacons.
